Professional accreditation

As a graduate, you are eligible to apply for registration as a teacher through the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT). This degree meets the expectations and requirements of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).

Entry requirements

  • Completed a 3-year bachelor degree, or equivalent, in a discipline other than education with a minimum GPA of 4.0 out of 7.0.
  • Applicants are accepted into the Master of Learning and Teaching (Secondary) based on their discipline studies from their academic transcript and qualifications, i.e. in relation to vocational education areas. For secondary teaching in two teaching areas, applicants must have studied six units that are relevant to a major teaching area and at least another four units that are relevant to a contrasting subject area or a different discipline area. The secondary discipline studies requirements can be met through further study that is completed from different courses at bachelor degree level or higher.
  • While not a requirement for admission, students need to pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) prior to the final supervised professional experience placement and to graduate from this degree. Students can register for the LANTITE through the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). If an applicant has achieved a 'satisfactory' result for one or more components of the LANTITE at another institution, the 'satisfactory' result can be carried across with this admission application.

Non-academic entry requirements

  • Complete a questionnaire and provide written statements to address the key competencies of effective teachers. The criteria for selection includes capabilities such as motivation to teach, suitability for the teaching profession, learning activities and leadership responsibilities. Refer to the selection guidelines for initial teacher education courses. 

English language requirements

You are required to satisfy the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires one or more of the following criteria: a minimum of IELTS 8.0, or equivalent, for speaking and listening, IELTS 7.0 for reading and writing, or an average band score of 7.5 across all four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. If you do not meet the English language requirements you may apply to study a University-approved English language program.

Recognition of prior learning or work experience

You may be eligible for recognition of prior learning if you have previously studied or have relevant work experience. This will help to reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your program.

Professional experience / Education placements

You will also need to complete 60 days of supervised professional experience. This experience provides you with opportunity to put theory into practice and to build significant industry connections. Students are required to attend the majority of placements in settings within Australia.

All students must be able to meet professional requirements expected of teachers within this degree, including holding a current Positive Exemption Card (Blue Card or Exemption Card), or equivalent.

How long does a Master of Learning and Teaching (Secondary) take to complete?

The time it takes you to complete a Master of Learning and Teaching or Master of Secondary Teaching qualification will vary depending on your study mode as well as the education provider you choose.

In general, masters degrees (including a Masters in Secondary Education or an equivalent) take the majority of students 1- 2 years to complete. 

At UniSQ, a Master of Learning and Teaching (Secondary) will take you approximately two years to complete. Some students choose to study part-time which increases the time it takes to finish the required courses.

What are the entry requirements?

In most instances, to qualify for entry into a postgraduate education degree such as a Masters in Teaching Secondary or a Masters of Secondary Education you will need to have completed an undergraduate qualification.

At UniSQ, students must have completed a 3-year bachelor degree (or equivalent) to enter the Masters of Learning and Teaching (Secondary). Your acceptance into the degree is based on your discipline studies from your academic transcript and qualification.

You will also be required to complete a questionnaire and a written statement detailing the key competencies of effective teachers.
