USQ recognised as a White Ribbon workplace

Professor Mackenzie said the accreditation officially recognised USQ as a pioneer in contributing to attitudinal and cultural change in the community.
USQ’s tireless efforts to prevent and respond to violence against women has earned the University the title of ‘White Ribbon Accredited Workplace’.

To achieve accreditation, USQ underwent an 18 month process to demonstrate its commitment to changing attitudes and behaviours, including an independent review by external assessors experienced in organisational development, gender equality and health.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Geraldine Mackenzie said the accreditation officially recognised USQ as a pioneer in contributing to attitudinal and cultural change in the community.

“I believe we can be proud of this achievement, and at the same time, use the accreditation as a platform to continue to raise awareness, and support our friends and colleagues who are affected by domestic and family violence,” Professor Mackenzie said.

“We must stand together in denouncing domestic and family violence in any form, and support those who have been affected by it. We owe the victims nothing less.”

The White Ribbon Australia Workplace Accreditation program drives positive workplace culture (including policy, procedures, training and communication) to enable the workplace community to enhance skills and knowledge to address abuse and violence against women, and to strengthen gender equality.

It recognises organisations that take a holistic approach to stop violence against women, meeting 15 criteria under three standards to create a safer and more respectful workplace.

Of those 15 criteria, USQ received ‘Outstanding Achievement’ for five criteria demonstrating innovation and creativity in its approach to engaging with the workforce to contribute to cultural and attitudinal change.

Accreditation lasts three years, evidencing an ongoing, sustainable commitment to the prevention of violence against women.

The White Ribbon Workplace Accreditation program compliments the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) citation received by USQ in 2016.
